LinkedIn Learning

When you use LinkedIn Learning for the first time, you will be given the option to bind your LinkedIn Learning account with your personal LinkedIn account. If you do not already have a personal LinkedIn account, you will be able to create one (don't use your Essex email for this). Joining LinkedIn is optional and you can add or remove it at any time. 

Note that if you bind accounts, in every new session, you’ll be asked to sign in twice i.e. to both LinkedIn Learning and LinkedIn. 

Binding your personal LinkedIn account with your LinkedIn Learning account will: 

• give you an enhanced user experience by using public elements of your profile to suggest relevant courses and insights into learning trends
• allow you to add certificates and completed courses directly to your LinkedIn page to show your skill progression
• let you share courses directly with other members of LinkedIn and LinkedIn Learning
• mean that should you leave Essex, you'll be able to print your certificates of completion and view your historical data

NB: If you choose not to bind accounts, you should print your certificates of completion before you leave Essex / lose access to your LinkedIn Learning account. 

If you can transfer your LinkedIn Learning account to another institutional account within 1 year, you will regain full access to courses/videos, your certificates of completion and historical data. If you disconnect your account, your previous learning data will still be available on the platform, so you'll need to make a request if you wish for this data to be removed.

Data shared with LinkedIn Learning

When you create your LinkedIn Learning account and log in, your username is shared with the LinkedIn Corporation. This is the minimum data required to securely access the service.

Types of user data accessible to LinkedIn Learning will include:

• Learning user information, which may include user ID, unique ID, name and email address.
• Email address and password.
• Product usage data, including learning activity, bookmarks, likes, notes and quiz results.
• IP address and device or browser characteristics.

Data shared with Essex County Libraries

Types of user data accessible to Essex County Libraries LinkedIn Learning administrators will include:

• Learning activity, such as courses viewed or completed.
• Usage data, such as when the user last logged on.

Users will have the option to connect their LinkedIn Learning account with their personal LinkedIn profile. This can be revoked at any time.

The University of Essex cannot access learning activity, such as courses viewed or completed, or usage data, such as when the user last logged into LinkedIn Learning.

If a user connects their LinkedIn Learning licence to their LinkedIn profile, Essex County Libraries could access and retain the following additional information:

• Profile information, such as name, work title and profile photo.
• Any courses from the user's personal account that the user has transferred to their group account.

Before you use the service, you must accept the User Agreement, through which you are agreeing to enter into a legally binding contract with LinkedIn. Your use of the service is also subject to LinkedIn's Cookie Policy and Privacy Policy, which cover how they collect, use, share and store your personal information.

This information may be used for aggregated analytics and reporting on uptake of the LinkedIn Learning service. Aggregated data, such as the most popular courses and topics, may be used to identify where there may be demand for training.

Linking your Learning account with your personal LinkedIn profile can be revoked at any time.

Your data is securely stored on LinkedIn servers and may be transferred to and stored in areas outside the European Economic Area. However, LinkedIn maintains GDPR compliance and has Standard Contractual Clauses in place with all customers for whom personal data will be stored in the United States, to ensure the protection of that personal data and the rights of data subjects.

Where the transfer will involve UK data transferring to the US, the UK ICO International Data Transfer Agreement will apply.

LinkedIn uses industry-recognised security practices such as password protection, data encryption, application security, physical security and secure networks to protect customers' information residing on the LinkedIn platform. Where data must be encrypted under applicable law, LinkedIn encrypts such data using an industry-recognised encryption method.
