Dr Charalampos (Babis) Rallis



Originally trained as a Developmental Biologist, Babis did his PhD on limb development at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill London with Prof Malcolm Logan followed by postdoctoral work on somitogenesis and vertebrate axis elongation at Cancer Research UK with Prof David Ish Horowicz, FRS. He then joined the Bahler Lab at the UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing and developed cell-based, genome-wide screens that address gene-gene, gene-drug, drug-drug functional relationships in ageing and lifespan regulation. Babis is a Lecturer in Cellular Ageing at University of Essex, Honorary Lecturer at the Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, University College London and Associate Lecturer in Cell and Molecular Biology at Birkbeck College, University of London. Currently, the Rallis Lab uses Systems Biology approaches in fission yeast and 2D/3D human tissue culture systems (fibroblasts, neural stem cells and neuroblastoma-derived human neurons) to investigate the molecular basis of cellular fitness, cancer and ageing with a focus on the nutrient-responsive signalling pathway Target of Rapamycin (TOR). The aim is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and principles behind senescence and lifespan and apply this knowledge for the amelioration of age-related diseases. Finally, the group performs quantitative fitness profiling of microbiomes and mycobiomes and explore the effects of nutrition on biome physiology and subsequent effects on human healthy ageing.
