Biography

Employment: Senior Lecturer, School of Biological Sciences, University of Essex, Oct 2011 - present Lecturer, School of Biological Sciences, University of Essex, Nov 2004 - Oct 2011 Research Assistant Professor, Laboratory for Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago, Sep 1999 - Sep 2004 Education: PhD in Biological Sciences, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria, 1990 - 1994 MSc in Biology, Sofia University St Kliment Ohridsky, Bulgaria, 1984 - 1989 Post-graduate certificate "C programming for Bioinformatics", University of Manchester, United Kingdom, Oct 2003 - Feb 2004 Research: Translational research; enabling personalized cancer therapy by proteogenomics: we combine computational data analysis with proteomics experiments conducted in the lab to identify and validate new diagnostic biomarkers and drug target candidates. Basic research; molecular mechanisms of signal transduction in the context of cancer: Since 2014 we apply the revolutionary CRISPR/Cas9 technique to edit candidate genes in the genome of human cell lines and study the effects of mutations found in large NGS datasets. One particular focus is the candidate tumour suppressor SCRIB. We have incorporated the CRISPR/Cas9 technique in our final-year and MSc research projects. Current research

Proteogenomics of cancer

My research and interests are in the field of cell and molecular biology and genomics/proteomics with special emphasize on cancer. We use quantitative mass spectrometry, molecular genetics, and computational approaches and statistics to study how aberrant protein expression, protein interactions and phosphorylation affect the tumour phenotype. The long term aim is to contribute to the development of novel diagnostics and therapies for cancer.
