My name is Rees Johnson and I am currently completing a PhD at the University of Manchester. The title of my PhD is: ‘Last Rights: A Genealogy of Assisted Death’. My thesis attempts to challenge the conventional narrative of assisted death, which tends to situate assisted death between the binaries of law and ethics. Utilising certain ideological concepts and discourses, I map the ways in which assisted death is instead a historically and culturally contingent concept that has evolved through socially organised forms of knowledge and certain power relations defining the relationships that exist between patients, institutional actors and the state at the end of life.
