Biography

I'm the Deputy University Secretary at the University of Essex. My particular responsibilities are in providing professional support and procedural advice to the Registrar and Secretary in their role as University Secretary. I lead the governance and information assurance teams and advise senior management team members on governance matters. I moved into the Office of the Vice-Chancellor in 2015, as Assistant Registrar. In this role, I supported the Registrar and Secretary in all areas of his responsibility, and led on strategically important tasks and projects. Prior to this, I worked for ten years in the UK Data Archive. Over the years, I have been the Associate Director for Data Access, the Associate Director of Information Systems and Preservation (both in the UK Data Service), and the director with responsibility for the Census; I also managed the development of the Census Registration Service. I led the SKOS-HASSET project in 2013, which piloted innovative solutions to automated indexing; I was a member of the Jisc-CASRAI UK Working Group on Organisational Lists; and I chaired the ELSST Translators Group. Prior to working in the UK Data Archive, I worked in research support for The Kings Fund, a UK health policy research organisation, and in the NHS. I have undertaken systematic reviews and am experienced in information and data management. I am a qualified Information Scientist.
