Profile

Biography

I am a Lecturer in Computer Science at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, at the University of Essex. I hold a PhD (DPhil) in Biomedical Engineering (Oxford), an MSc in Advanced Computer Science (Bristol), a Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB - Bristol), and a BSc in Neuroscience (Bristol). In the past I have worked as a doctor in the NHS, and had also co-founded the (now defunct) Sentimoto Ltd, a company with a focus on Wearables for Older Adults which won multiple awards, before eventually becoming absorbed into Babylon Health. Additionally I hold an AdvanceHE Fellowship (FHEA) and I'm a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in piano performance. I am also a keen squash player, ever-striving to improve my ranking at the university's squash league. My academic research focuses on clinical and public health applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In particular, I’m interested in: data analysis and information fusion from biological signals (e.g. Brain Computer Interfaces, wearables, hospital-derived, etc) and digitised health data; medical image analysis, explainability, and appropriate validation; applications of neural, fuzzy, and genetic methods; AI or tech-oriented public health interventions, and the use and benefits of free and open-source software in medicine. In recent years I have also dabbled a bit in computational finance (in collaboration with colleagues from Essex), specifically in algorithmic trading and portfolio optimisation. I currently teach CE303: Advanced Programming, which focuses on advanced programming concepts, primarily explored through Java, a bit of Haskell, and with sparse references to other programming languages more generally. In the past I have also taught CE310: Evolutionary Computation and Genetic Programming, as well as some introductory short courses in scientific python and Matlab/Octave. I'm always up for a chat over coffee with interesting people (and/or fellow computer nerds!).
