Three athletes selected for Commonwealth Games

Three University of Essex athletes will compete on one of sport's biggest stages this summer after being selected for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Essex Rebels captain Claire Paxton has been selected to represent Scotland in the women's 3x3 basketball competition, while undergraduate gymnasts Emily Roper and Abigail Roper will compete for Wales.

Paxton has become one of the defining figures in Essex Rebels history, captaining the women's team through its most successful season to date.

Alongside leading the team to its highest-ever league finish, she helped guide the Rebels to a perfect home record in the regular season and a first-ever home play-off.

Emily and Abigail joined the University last autumn through its sports scholarship programme with the ambition of qualifying for the Commonwealth Games.

Their selection for Wales marks another milestone in their gymnastics careers and rewards months of hard work as they prepare to compete against some of the world's best athletes.

The opening ceremony takes place on Thursday (23 July) with 3x3 basketball and gymnastics starting the next day.

Dr Dave Parry, Director of Sport, said: "We are immensely proud to celebrate Claire Paxton, Abigail Roper and Emily Roper on their selection to compete at the Commonwealth Games this summer.

"Reaching such a prestigious and celebrated international stage is a significant achievement and will undoubtedly be an incredible experience for each of them.

"Claire has been an integral part of the Essex Rebels since joining in 2021, as well as twice being a member of BUCS national championship-winning teams.

"She is also a firm crowd favourite.

"This marks Claire's second Commonwealth Games, having previously represented Scotland in 3x3 basketball at Birmingham 2022, demonstrating the exceptionally high standards she has consistently set herself over many years.

"Abigail and Emily joined the University of Essex last autumn with a clear ambition to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

"They have worked tirelessly to achieve that goal, and it will be hugely exciting to see them compete in Glasgow representing Wales in gymnastics.

"The success of all three athletes is testament not only to their talent and dedication, but also highlights the quality of the environment and support we provide to our sports scholarship athletes.

"It reflects the expertise and commitment of the staff who support them within our dual career framework, enabling students to excel both in their sport and their studies."

Abigail said: "I’m so excited to be representing Wales and to do it alongside my twin sister is even more special!

"I can’t wait to get out to Glasgow and hopefully to do my best performances!"
