From the basketball court to a prestigious plant science programme in Germany, Biochemistry graduate Josefine Reumert is taking the next step in a journey that began at the University of Essex.

Originally from Søllerød, Denmark, Josefine has been accepted onto the CEPLAS Graduate School PhD-track programme, which includes an integrated Masters in Molecular Plant Biology.

The opportunity follows three years at Essex combining academic study with high-level basketball through the University's Performance Sport programme.

"I have always been fascinated by how living systems function at the molecular level," she said. "Studying Biochemistry has given me the opportunity to explore the mechanisms behind life."

Essex stood out because it offered the chance to pursue academic ambitions alongside competitive sport.

"I was particularly attracted to Essex because of the Basketball Sports Performance Programme, which offered the opportunity to combine sport with academic study," she explained.

Looking back on her time at Essex, it is the people she met who made the biggest impression.

"The people I have met throughout my time at Essex have made it especially memorable, both my teammates and the students and staff on my course."

Moving to the UK brought challenges, including adapting to a new country, culture and academic environment while balancing the demands of competitive basketball.

"Moving abroad and adapting to a new academic and cultural environment were significant challenges," she said.

"Balancing the demands of competitive basketball alongside my studies also required time-management skills. However, Essex provides support and an environment that makes it possible to succeed in both areas."

During her studies, Dr Amanda Cavanagh helped inspire her next academic step by nurturing her interest in plant biology and encouraging her to apply to the CEPLAS Graduate School.

"Amanda Cavanagh inspired me to develop a strong interest in plant biology and encouraged me to apply for the CEPLAS Graduate School," she said.

"Her enthusiasm for the subject and support throughout my studies played an important role in shaping my academic interests."

She believes Essex offers something special to prospective students.

"Essex offers a welcoming and diverse community where you can learn from people with different backgrounds. In addition, the Sports Performance Programme provides an excellent opportunity to combine sporting ambitions with academic success."

Now preparing to move to Germany, she is looking forward to continuing her development as a researcher and building a career in plant science.

She added: "I am excited to continue developing as a researcher, expand my expertise in plant science, and pursue a career in scientific research."
