Final-year Drama students at the University of Essex took centre stage as this year’s Launch Festival transformed the Lakeside Theatre into a celebration of emerging creative talent.

The four-day festival showcased original performances created and performed by third-year undergraduate students from the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies, marking the culmination of their studies and offering audiences the chance to experience bold new work from the next generation of performers and theatre-makers.

Open to students, staff and the wider public, the festival featured an eclectic mix of productions spanning contemporary drama, experimental theatre, comedy and devised performance. The event forms a key part of the students’ transition into the creative industries, giving them the opportunity to stage professional-level productions and perform in front of live audiences.

Launch Festival has become an important platform for showcasing emerging talent in Essex, while strengthening links between the University and the region’s wider arts community.

Dr Andrew Burton, Lecturer in Drama and Creative Writing, said: “This year's Launch Festival was a powerful reminder of the value of the performing arts in our lives.

“Third-year undergraduate students presented a dazzling, eclectic, diverse and highly engaging series of performances which were open to the general public and to fellow students alike.

“The applause was rapturous - a fitting end to their undergraduate studies as many of these students are moving on to become professional performers locally, regionally and nationally.”

The festival also highlighted the University’s continued commitment to nurturing creative practice and providing students with real-world industry experience throughout their studies.

Hosted at the University’s Lakeside Theatre, Launch Festival gives audiences the chance to discover original voices and innovative storytelling, while offering students a springboard into careers across theatre, performance and the wider creative industries.
