The University of Essex has announced a groundbreaking new collaboration with researchers at Stanford Medicine, marking a major leap forward in digital education for students of all backgrounds and skill levels.
Led by Professor Reinhold Scherer, Head of the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE), the collaboration will give Essex students direct access to world-leading online learning in coding, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).
As part of the collaboration, students will also gain hands-on experience using Stanford Data Ocean platform, engaging with cutting-edge digital tools, real-world case studies, and expert sessions delivered by Dr. Amir Bahmani, Director of Stanford's Deep Data Research Center and his team at the Stanford School of Medicine.
Professor Scherer said: “In a world where digital skills are essential, this collaboration puts Essex students in a position to lead, not follow.”
“With this effort, Essex positions itself at the forefront of accessible, future ready digital education, empowering students to step confidently into the next generation of technological innovation.
“The message behind the initiative is bold and simple: students can upgrade their skills now.”
He added: "I want to thank the team behind this collaboration for making this wonderful partnership happen, particularly Alison Derbenwick Miller and Richards Pitts.”
The first programme launches in April and takes place across ten-weeks with online sessions.
It will feature expert lectures, live Q&A sessions, hands-on cloud computing experience, and a joint certificate upon completion.
“This collaboration opens a new chapter in how we prepare students for the future,” said Professor Silke Paulmann, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Health.
“We are giving them world-class opportunities to grow, innovate, and lead.
Lars Steinmetz, Professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics at the Stanford School of Medicine added: “As medicine becomes increasingly data-driven and shaped by AI, initiatives like our Stanford Data Ocean are designed to equip learners around the world with the tools, knowledge, and perspective they need to remain at the forefront of this transformation.”
