It’s the third time in recent years that a University of Essex student nurse has been selected by the leading industry publication to represent the student voice.
Emmanuela, who is from Nigeria, will write about policies that affect nursing education, describe what it’s like to be an overseas student nurse in the UK and reflect on her experiences studying in the east and on placements.
Her articles, which will focus on her experiences in adult nursing, will be published on her own dedicated Nursing Times student page, where readers will be able to engage with her views.
Emmanuela is the third Essex student nurse to join the Nursing Times’ editorial team since 2019. Cheyne Truman, now a member of academic staff in the School of Health and Social Care, and Sunny Atkinson, who is now studying for a research Masters degree at Essex, were both previously student editors.
She said: “Choosing to relocate to the UK to pursue a nursing degree has been one of the most transformative decisions of my life. It was driven by a deep passion for healthcare, a desire to grow professionally, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
“I want to use this opportunity to amplify the voices of student nurses from all backgrounds, highlight both our struggles and successes, and create a space that informs, empowers and inspires the next generation of nurses.”
Senior Lecturer Thomas Currid, from the School of Health and Social Care, said: “We are delighted that Emmanuela has become an editor. Without a doubt, there would have been a number of good quality candidates, all hoping to have the opportunity to have this influential role. This is an amazing achievement and well deserved.
“We know that Emanuella will significantly contribute to the world of being a nursing student, as she draws on her perspectives and experiences, particularly as an overseas student.
"It demonstrates Emanuella`s commitment and leadership in ensuring that topical issues will be addressed in the evolving nature of nursing and the vision towards continuous improvement and delivery of quality patient care.”
