Two high-flying Essex graduates have been nominated in the 2025 Social Worker of the Year Awards.
Anthony Achebe and Joe Peppiatt are in the running for the national awards, which attract hundreds of entries every year and is overseen by an independent panel of judges featuring industry leaders and people with experience in social care.
Anthony has been shortlisted in the Newly Qualified Adult Social Worker category for his work at Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT), while Joe Peppiatt has been recognised for his work for Essex County Council by being shortlisted for the Newly Qualified Children Social Worker.
Anthony, who graduated with an MA Social Work in 2024, is currently a Team Leader at HPFT and says he has developed a strong professional identity rooted in empathy, resilience, and accountability – an ethic he attributes to his time at Essex.
“Being shortlisted for the Social Worker of the Year awards is a tremendous honour,” he said.
“It’s incredibly validating to know that the work I do has had such a positive impact, it reinforces exactly why I chose this profession.
"Social work can be tough, but moments like this remind me that the effort, compassion, and dedication truly make a difference. It also reflects the support I’ve received from my team and mentors, and I’m proud to represent the values and commitment that Essex instilled in me.”
Joe is working in Youth Justice, having graduated from Essex with a BA Social Work in 2024.
He thanks the practical experience he gained from the placement programme at Essex for preparing him for his first year in social work, as well as the support he was given from lecturers throughout his studies.
Joe said: “In a role that at times can feel thankless, it is amazing to have been nominated for such an award.
“I feel truly humbled, and the nomination serves as a tangible reminder of all the hard work I have put in all year.
“As someone who finds it hard to accept praise, I have had to lean into the discomfort as I know this is something I should be really proud of and deserve to relish.”
The winners of the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2025 will be announced on Friday, 17 October.
