The Alan Turing Institute has expanded its prestigious university network to include the University of Essex among its 29 new members.

The Turing University Network, which now boasts 65 members, offers UK universities, with an interest in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), the opportunity to engage and collaborate both with the Institute and its broader networks in academia, industry and the public sector.

The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence.

The network first launched as a pilot in April 2023 with 36 universities from the Turing’s university partners and Turing Network Development Award recipients. An open call for new members was then launched in early summer 2023.

It is a key component of The Alan Turing Institute’s strategy and supports the Institute in achieving its three ambitious goals: advance world-class research and apply it to national and global challenges, build skills for the future, and drive an informed public conversation.

Professor Haris Mouratidis, Director of the University of Essex’s Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) said: “We are delighted that Essex is now a member of the Turing University Network. We are proud of our depth of expertise in data science and analytics across disciplines.

“At IADS we are committed to unlocking the power of data and applying our expertise to addressing many important issues in society.”

IADS follows a radical new socio-technical data science approach that explores the relationship between humans, data and technology and introduces trustworthiness at the centre, to ensure impactful research and data sciences solutions people trust.

Dr Jean Innes, Chief Executive Officer of The Alan Turing Institute, added: “We’re really pleased to welcome our new members to the network. We hope that they will benefit from being part of our data science and AI group and find opportunities for new, meaningful collaborations across the data science and AI landscape.
