Footballers 'buzzing' after England squad call-up

Mayowa Agbolade, 20, and Emiliano Hysi, 26, called up to England Universities squad

Two Essex soccer stars have been named in the latest England Universities squad after a storming season.

Emiliano Hysi, 26, and Mayowa Agbolade, 20, were selected in the latest top squad ahead of crunch games on the 26th February 2023 at St. George's Park.

Both players have been named in the wider England Universities squad and will now compete against northern students ahead of a final 24 being selected.

Left-back Mayowa, who is studying Sports and Exercise Science, and attacking midfielder Emiliano, studying Economics play for the Essex Blades 1st team, who are top of their league.

Mayowa, originally from Tower Hamlets, said: “It is amazing to be selected, I feel like my hard work has paid off and hopefully I can make everyone proud.

“I just want to take this chance to thank God for this opportunity.”

Emiliano, from South London, said: “I’m buzzing to get the opportunity to represent England.

“I look forward to the opportunity and also having a good time with the boys.”

The two Blades aces will now join with the nation’s best young players to compete against other home nations.

Organised by English Universities Sport the team supports the development of student-athletes and provides opportunities to compete at the highest domestic representative level.

The teams compete in the biennial Home Nations Tournament as well as numerous fixtures against professional and amateur representative clubs.

First Team Coach and Football Development Officer Pedro Bruno welcomed the announcement.

He said: “I’m over the moon for Mayowa and Emiliano who fully deserve their place in the squad.

“They are both key members of our team and have been instrumental in helping us fight for playoff glory this year.

“I’ve no doubt they will both excel and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
