Join fiction writer Penny Simpson and photo-artist Ania Ready for a creative writing workshop centred on discovering creative strategies to fill in the gaps in a life lived – real or imagined.

How does a writer bring together archival sources, text and image to construct past lives? What clues are left behind, and how might we re-imagine them? The workshop will also include a visit to the Library, University of Essex, to view a specially curated exhibition of items from Polish Modernist writer Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska’s archive, the inspiration for this workshop.

Writing with Images: Archive, Text & Image
This workshop launches Writing with Images, a programme of creative writing workshops exploring the application of visual arts techniques to the writing of fiction and non-fiction.

Writing with Images has been devised by Dr Penny Simpson, an author and Visiting Fellow in the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies, in collaboration with the Special Collections at the University Library. The workshops are co-facilitated by photo-artist Ania Ready. In the workshops, participants will learn new approaches to writing through playful experiment with text and image.

Two more workshops will follow on Saturday 9 May and Saturday 20 June.
