About the Speakers

Dr Michele Stephens will discuss how Trump’s position on migration will affect victims of gender-based violence, both those living undocumented in the USA and those attempting to enter the USA. She will draw on her experience of working with asylum claims in the USA to discuss what will change for women migrants under Trump and how his hardline position on migration may affect asylum for victims of gender-based violence in Latin America.

Dr Patricia Palacios Zuloaga will speak about the rollback of abortion rights since the fall of Roe v. Wade, brought about by a Supreme Court where three of seven Justices were nominated by Donald Trump. She will discuss the parallel situation in Central American countries where abortion is completely banned, and the efforts being undertaken by women’s rights groups to ease policies of forced pregnancy. Drawing on her experience in international litigation against total bans on abortion, she will discuss what life looks like for women and pregnant people in a state where all abortion is banned.
