The Centre for Commons Organising, Values Equalities and Resilience (COVER) welcomes Levon Kwok as he discussed his research on the independent media movement in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Seminar summary

The COVID-19 pandemic for 2020-21, the war in Ukraine for 2022, the Israel-Palestine conflicts for 2023, etc. Who are the ones who create this set of news agendas? The heads of state and corporate media for the establishment. Through social platforms, TVs and radios, they manipulate public opinion and divert our attention from core issues concerning human hostility, exploitation and poverty. How can we counteract this situation? Run our own media independently. During his presentation, Levon Kwok, a Hong Kong-born independent researcher, will discuss relevant issues and examples of independent media from his newly published book The Independent Media Movements in Hong Kong and Taiwan: Dissenting Voices.
