It's very normal for students in the first term of university to "have a wobble". Whether you are new to Essex, or returning to your studies, the Department of Sociology has organised a series of events open to students in the department to help boost your wellbeing, normalise these wobbles, and build peer networks.

"Everyone else seems to have settled in to university just fine."

"I miss home and I'm considering withdrawing from my course."

"I'm not sure if university life is for me."

These are things we hear a lot from students at the start of term, and this is completely normal and to be expected! No matter how big or small, we want you to feel assured that having a wobble can happen to everyone, for various reasons and at various times. This week is in place to provide support and help you learn more about university that you may have missed hearing about during Welcome Week.

Scroll down to see our full schedule of events. All events are completely free and open to all students studying in the Department of Sociology.

What is a wobble, anyway?

This online event will talk you through the various events during our Wobble Week. It's a time for us to come together for a short, informal chat about any concerns or worries that are currently on your mind, and hear from some of our student mentors about their experiences of life at Essex, and what you can do to tackle anything you're struggling to adjust to. Join via Zoom with Meeting ID 961 5487 6749. Find out more about getting started with using Zoom.

Look After Your Mate - Student Minds Mental Health workshop

Date: Wednesday 1 November
Time: 1 - 3.30pm
Location: 5A.118

You may not be having a wobble, but it may be possible that one of your friends or peers could be. This workshop is designed by the UK's student mental health charity, Student Minds, and has been developed to empower students to build confidence in having conversations with a friend on their mental health, whilst also supporting their own wellbeing. Spaces are limited and must be reserved in advance. To book your spot, email socstudy@essex.ac.uk. Confirmation of attendance to this event is also eligible for meeting part of the assessment criteria for SC199 'Career Development and Making a Difference'.
