This lecture will explore significant achievements, impacts, and challenges of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace.

Nelson Camilo Sanchez is an associate professor of law at the University of Virginia School of Law, a research associate at the Center for the Study of Law, Justice and Society – Dejusticia, in Colombia, and a Co-Director of the UKRI GCRF Gender, Justice and Security Hub. His research focuses on justice in post conflict scenarios; land governance and peacebuilding; and the role of international human rights law in the Colombian transitional justice process.

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (SJP) in Colombia represents a ground-breaking and ambitious innovation in transitional justice. Uniquely, the SJP is the first system in which an undefeated rebel group has willingly submitted to a domestic judicial process. What truly distinguishes the SJP, however, is its extensive reach over state actors as well as civilians involved in serious human rights violations. Five years since the SJP took up its work, the lecture will explore significant achievements, impacts, and challenges of the SJP.
