Empirical Facts about Normative Values by Julian Jamison

Join us for another event in the Microeconomics Research Seminar Series, Autumn Term 2022.

Julian Jamison from the Business School, University of Exeter will present Empirical Facts about Normative Values.

Abstract

Policy decisions often depend on normative tradeoffs without objectively correct answers, such as the relative [dis]value of death at different ages; the wellbeing neutral points of being dead and of nonexistence; weights on animal vs human welfare; and of course the [social] rate of pure time preference. Although survey evidence regarding people's expressed values are far from dispositive, they constitute one useful input into decisions that must somehow be taken. We provide results from several such surveys based on samples in Brazil, China, the UK, and the US.

This seminar will be held in the Economics Common Room on Monday 31 October 2022 at 4pm. This event is open to all levels of study and is also open to the public. To register your place and gain access to the webinar, please contact the seminar organisers.

This event is part of the Microeconomics Research Seminar Series.
