Clearing Open Day

Join us at our Colchester Campus for a day of talks, tours and a chance to ask our staff those burning questions

Are you thinking of coming to University in October 2022 but haven't visited Essex yet? Here's your chance!

We're hosting a Clearing Open Day on Saturday 20 August to give you a chance to get to know Essex if you haven't visited us yet (or if you've been to see us already and just fancy another look around!) See our accommodation, get a tour of campus, meet some of our academics and chat to current students.

Maybe you've applied but haven't visited us yet, or perhaps you want to see our Colchester Campus for yourself before taking the plunge - whatever the reason, everyone is welcome. Bring your friends and family along too!

Our Clearing Open Day will begin at 10am, and will finish at 4pm. Please make sure you check-in at the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall (the big shiny silver building) - you'll even get a goody bag!

What can you expect?

There will of course be the chance to talk with academics, tour our campus and accommodation and generally get a feel for the place. But in true Essex style there will also be some extras:

  • Musicians playing throughout the day on our Squares
  • Painting activities to help you relax after a full on week
  • The chance to check out some of our catering options, plus the SU are putting on a BBQ
  • Free ice cream!

Accommodation tours

We are pleased to confirm that we can offer tours of Wolfsen Court, South Courts and South Towers and hope to confirm other accommodation types in August. During the event, as time is limited, you may not be able to view multiple accommodation types so we would encourage you to submit your top 2 choices on the booking form and we hope to be able to accommodate this.

To book your place, fill in the form below...

Places for this event are limited so book your place now to avoid disappointment

Booking confirmation

Once you’ve booked your place we'll send you a confirmation email. There's no need to print it as we'll have your details at our check in desks on the day – simple!

Programme

We're still finalising the details for our Clearing Open Day, making sure we really get to show you Essex at its best. Here is the outline of the day:

  • The event will run 10am - 4pm.
  • Please check in at Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall (the big shiny building) - this is the main venue for the day.
  • Between 10am - 2pm academics from your department will be available to chat to - don't be afraid to ask them questions! Unfortunately there will not be academics from Occupational Therapy or Oral Health Sciences. Physiotherapy academics will also be unavailable, however students interested in Physiotherapy can talk to someone from our School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences.
  • Guided tours of campus and accommodation will be running throughout. Our Student Ambassadors will show around, which is also a great opportunity to ask Essex students what life here is really like.
  • Welcome, Accommodation and SU Talks will repeat through the day, so don't worry if you can't get to us for 10am sharp.

Special requirements

If you or your guests have any special requirements, please email us in advance so we can make sure your visit is as smooth as possible. If you're a visitor with a disability, please let a member of staff know so they can advise you on accessible routes around campus. If you would prefer a personal tour of our campus and/or accommodation, then let us know when you check in and we'll arrange for a Student Ambassador to guide you.

New contact details?

Should your contact information change, please drop us an email to let us know your new details so we can make sure you don’t miss out on any important information.

Arrival

You're welcome to arrive any time from 10am and the Welcome talk is at 10.30am. The Open Day officially finishes at 4pm.

When you arrive, head to our friendly staff in the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall who will register your arrival. We’ll only ask for your name so there’s no need to bring anything with you. Next, head to our Welcome Café, grab a free tea and coffee and put your feet up before the tours and talks!

Getting to us by car

Whether approaching the University of Essex from London and the South or Ipswich and the North via the A12, take the exit marked Colchester (A133). Follow the A133 towards Clacton, ignore the entrance to the Knowledge Gateway, continue along the A133 then take the B1028 for Wivenhoe before turning right into Boundary Road.

Parking

Please follow the Valley Car Park signs which will lead you to our allocated visitor parking. Parking for the open day is free. Our patrol staff should be on hand to show you where to go. The address of our Colchester Campus is:

University of Essex
Wivenhoe Park
Colchester
CO4 3SQ

If you are using a SatNav, please use the following postcode, CO4 3FA (what3words - horn.wished.song) as this will direct you to our car parks.

Getting to us by bus or train

Trains

Unfortunately the RMT strike action planned for 20 August is due to affect Greater Anglia, therefore we would suggest planning alternative travel arrangements to visit us.

Bus
  • First Bus provide most bus services in and around Colchester and the University. Tickets can be bought online or via their app as well as contactless payment on the bus itself.
  • The Panther X15 service provides services from Harwich to the University.
  • National Express coaches run services from around the country to Colchester (drop off and pick up point is currently East Hill close to Colchester Castle) including from London and UK airports. Please note, for some journeys you may need to change buses before continuing to your destination.
