Essex Public International Law Lecture: The Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights Arbitration - an effective remedy?

In this lecture, Ursula Kriebaum discusses the main characteristics of The Hague Rules on Business and Human Rights Arbitration. These Rules provide a set of procedures for the arbitration of disputes related to the impacts of business activities on human rights. They have a dual function: to provide access to a remedy for rights-holders affected by business activities and to provide a human rights compliance and risk management strategy for businesses themselves. In this lecture, Ursula Kriebaum discusses the main characteristics of these rules. She will analyze their advantages compared to the UNCITRAL arbitration rules on which they are based and to court litigation. She will present the specific features of the rules to provide a dispute settlement mechanism that complies with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
