How best to educate young people about the climate crisis? Dr Katy Wheeler, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Sociology, presents their findings:
Educating the next generation about sustainability and climate change is a key policy goal at all educational levels. This presentation will trace some of the history of environmental and sustainability education, before presenting findings from a content analysis of a wide-ranging collection of UK sustainability resources aimed at children aged between 7-11. Although environmental and sustainable development education have their roots in critical pedagogy, the educational resources I analysed presented a limited role for young people as consumers and adopters of sustainable lifestyle practices rather than as citizens engaged in collective political action.
