We are hosting an online webinar series for students that are about to embark on (or thinking of!) studying a Masters degree. Our Skills for Success Series is a week-long event with sessions designed to support students in their transition to a postgraduate level of study and equip them with the skills to succeed and thrive at Essex.

Join us for a free one-week online course that comprises daily sessions on upskilling students in areas of research, critical thinking, presenting, career planning, networking and more.

You can pick and choose which sessions to attend and you will be eligible to receive a certificate of attendance if you attend four or more sessions.

Critical Thinking at Postgraduate Level, Monday 10 January 12-1pm GMT

Postgraduate study demands excellent analytical skills. This session will explore the challenges of postgraduate work and consider the critical thinking skills required for effective study at this level. We will also share with you the forms of support available to you to improve these skills while you are studying at Essex. This is also an opportunity for you to ask us questions that you may have on this aspect of postgraduate studies.

Finding your Postgraduate Academic Voice, Tuesday 11 January 12.30-1.30pm GMT

Hear from a current postgraduate student about their experience transitioning from undergraduate study to postgraduate including postgraduate academic culture within their field of study and learn tips and techniques to succeed in studying your Masters.

Research Skills for Postgraduates: Developing a Research Proposal and Exploring Library Resources, Wednesday 12 January 12-2pm GMT

The dissertation is one of the most important elements of postgraduate study. This session is an introduction to what a Master’s dissertation is and how to choose a good research topic. We will look at ways to produce an effective research proposal and provide tips on how the library resources can help you find high quality, relevant material. 

Overcoming Writer's Block and Time Management, Thursday 13 January 11-12.30pm GMT

In the first half of this session we explore how to overcome writer’s block. This workshop provides practical ways to break through the creative barrier in search of the right words. We also explore time management and organisation skills as well as how we support our postgraduate students so that they can make get the most out of support services available

Create time for Career Planning: Employability and Presenting Skills, Friday 14 January 11-12.30pm GMT

This session is about keeping ahead and ensuring you are making the most of our careers service as a postgraduate student. We will look at how to create time for career planning, make new contacts/networks, and develop skills on building your personal brand. We will also provide tips on presenting including how to deliver presentations, as well as sell yourself and your ideas confidently.
