The Essex Public International Law Lecture Series welcomes you to to the latest instalment presented by
Professor Bjørn Kunoy Professor of Public International Law, University of the Faroe Islands and chaired by Dr Meagan Wong from the School of Law at the University of Essex.

Intercross of Inner and Outer Continental Shelf Entitlements

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea provides two different definitions to determine the breadth of the continental shelf. The distance-based entitlement is limited to a maximum breadth of 200 nautical miles from the baselines, while the natural prolongation-based entitlement may go far beyond the distance-based entitlement, and in some cases extends up to 800 nautical miles from the baselines. This lecture will discuss whether natural prolongation-based entitlements may extend into distance-based entitlements, and accordingly call for the establishment of a delimitation line within the overlap that is entirely located in the area landward the 200 nautical line distance line of one of the States parties to the dispute.

About the speaker:

Bjørn Kunoy is professor of international law at the University of the Faroe Islands. He is listed as conciliator and arbitrator under Annex V and VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and as Panellist under the Dispute settlement mechanism of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization and the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization

About the Essex Public International Law Lecture Series

The Essex Public International Law lecture series is founded, hosted and co-chaired by Dr Meagan Wong and Dr Emily Jones based in the School of Law. This is a weekly lecture series featuring judges of international courts and tribunals, leading academics, and practitioners of international law from governmental service, international organizations, and private practice from across the globe.
