These Departmental Seminars are for everyone in Maths. We encourage anyone interested in the subject in general, or in the particular subject of the seminar, to come along. It's a great opportunity to meet people in the Maths Department and join in with our community.

Discussing ethics with the mathematicians who need it most

For the last 20 years it has become increasingly obvious, and increasingly pressing, that mathematicians should start to develop some ethical awareness so as to understand the impact of their work. Indeed, mathematicians are now creating tools of great power and influence, and with this comes great responsibility.

But which mathematicians should be discussing this, and what should they be discussing?

In this talk Maurice Chiodo will explore the idea that all mathematicians will, at some stage in their professional career, be faced with ethical challenges as part of their work. And with this, the need to understand and address these challenges themselves.
