Climate change urgently requires radical reduction of carbon emissions. About that there is now a broad consensus. But there is much less consensus about the best means to achieve that end. One issue that has sharply divided both the policy and the activist community concerns the place of nuclear power in a green future. Is a big investment in nuclear power an indispensable part of the pathway to a 'net-zero' future? Or should we shut down nuclear power once and for all? Here in North Essex, the question takes on an additional urgency. Bradwell nuclear power station is just 15km from campus as the crow (or the radiation) flies. Although currently decommissioned, Bradwell continues to be considered as a possible site for a new reactor. Should we support the resumption of nuclear energy production at Bradwell or resist it? Help us THINK through nuclear power and the future of energy production in the UK.
