SLS - IEL Collective Teaching Workshop Series
Contextualising, diversifying and decolonising IEL Education
Please join us for the SLS-IEL Collective Teaching Workshop Series: contextualising, diversifying and decolonising IEL Education, hosted by University of Essex.
These workshops will be focused on exploring new ways of teaching and learning in IEL that speak to the Collective’s objective of contextualising, diversifying and decolonising the scholarship on IEL. In light of the growing importance of IEL subjects for shaping both scholarly thinking and policymaking nationally and globally, the workshop will seek to identify and discuss innovative pedagogical concepts and practices to nurture the next generation of IEL scholars, teachers and practitioners.
The first workshop will explore new and emerging methodologies that aim to create more epistemically inclusive teaching of IEL; and shift IEL teaching away from a narrow, self-contained and theoretical discipline and situate its pedagogy and teaching practice within the broader lived experiences of constituencies affected by IEL rules and institutions. This first event will also feature a discussion of the experiences of IEL scholars and teachers in the global south.
The second workshop will take place in Spring 2021 and focus on (1) locating IEL curricula within a broader contextual framework of the social, economic and geopolitical realities of the global economy and global constituencies, including drawing links between IEL and other areas of international and national law, such as on climate change, labour, health, socio-economic and human rights; and (2) harnessing emerging technologies and new innovative teaching methods to foster more pluralistic, diverse and innovative ways of engaging with IEL disciplines.
