An open seminar from the Department of Language and Linguistics, with Professor Monika Schmid.

Monika Schmid is the Head of Department and Professor at the Department of Language and Linguistics. Monika's main topic of research is the loss of the native language, also called First Language Attrition.

Multilingual professionals are often adept at interaction in a professional and appropriate way in their different languages in a range of contexts. However, there are a number of potential challenges which we should all be aware of, as being generally proficient in more than one language does not necessarily mean that highly specific language-related skills automatically transfer between the languages. In addition, some aspects of a language that is not in constant use may become ‘rusty’ and need ‘polishing up’ before we engage in a professional exchange.

This seminar will point out some of these challenges and show to what extent professionals can avoid embarrassment and damage to their reputation by learning to be sensitive to any pitfalls.
