An open seminar from the Department of Language and Linguistics by external speaker Professor David Katan.

David Katan is a Professor of English and Translation, and course Leader of the MA Translation and Interpreting course at the University of Salento (Lecce), specialising in translation, intercultural communication and tourism.

The aim of this talk is to illustrate how E.T. Hall’s Tripartite Iceberg model of Culture may be adapted to illustrate how culture influences translation. ‘Culture’ here means anything from culture ‘on the go’, to a community of practice or ‘languaculture’. Translating means taking into account not only the various levels and situations of context and culture, but also being mindful of the envisaged reader.
