How will an Italian mafia fugitive do business during lockdown? To what end will the gangs in the favelas of Rio use their intimidatory techniques?

Organised Crime and COVID-19

Join Dr Anna Sergi from the Department of Sociology as she explores organised crime in the era of COVID-19.

Drug trafficking, healthcare fraud, money laundering – there are many forms of organised crime, operating within many different structures, on many different levels. All will have to try and adapt to the current crisis and the ‘new normal’ post COVID-19.  Some will perish, some will survive, some will be born and some will be forgotten – but who, how and why?

This live webinar will be hosted by Dr Anna Sergi from the Department of Sociology. The event will run from 12:30pm until 1:30pm on Wednesday 20 May via Zoom.

This event is part of the Essex Social Science on COVID-19 webinar series and is organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences. The webinar is open to the public and completely free of charge. To register your place and join the webinar, book your place via Zoom:
