The Essex English Language Assessment is compulsory for all international students with English as an additional language.
If you are an international student then you probably already have an English language certificate of proficiency such as IELTS or TOEFL. However, like most other British universities we require all newly registered students whose first language is not English to sit a short English language assessment of our own.
If your first language is not English, you'll need to attend the assessment briefing session on Monday 7 October, then book your assessment time via CareerHub.
The assessment is 75 minutes long and consists of 4 sections:
The Essex English Language Assessment is not a pass/fail test, but is instead a diagnostic assessment which aims to provide us with a single, consistent measure of English language proficiency across the whole of our international student body. The results will then be emailed to you, together with information on how to register for our free English language support classes.
Skills for Success runs the Essex English Language Assessment. We are also here to help you succeed in your studies and achieve your potential. We offer support and resources to help improve your writing, maths, research, study skills and English language, no matter what your discipline or level of study.
