Cytosines in the dinucleotide CG are heavily but not completely 5-methylated.

The profile of DNA methylation differs between cell types and it is involved in establishing or stabilising the developmental pattern of gene expression, and continues to change throughout life.

Some environmental exposures are known to affect DNA methylation, smoking is a very strong one.

In this seminar Professor Schalkwyk will review the work on age and smoking and look at what we might be able to do with air pollution.
