Ugo Troiano will be presenting new evidence about the introduction of the income tax by exploiting the staggered introduction of the income tax across US states.

Ugo has found that tax broadening is associated with significant outmigration to other states along with significant increases in both total state revenues and expenditures and state expenditures on education.
Consistent with these results, he explains that the number of 4-year colleges at the state level increased after the introduction of the income tax.
