Bilingualism is a simple word hiding a world's worth of complexity.

In this presentation, I will narrow it down to young bilinguals from birth with two studies that evaluate vocabulary and lexical development in two-year-old bilinguals from birth. Of these, one factor that was mostly understudied so far stands out: linguistic distance.

 

I will discuss how linguistic distance can explain some of our results and what it may mean for our understanding of early lexical development in bilinguals, and potentially expanding it to other types of "input variety".
