Widening financial participation is crucial in achieving long-term development objectives. In the UK, the causes and effects of financial exclusion are many and varied, affecting a range of people at various stages in life.

The 2017 House of Lords Select Committee on Financial Exclusion report indicates that 1.71 million adults in the UK do not have a bank account. The problem is particularly severe for 18 to 19 year-olds, with around 8% not having a bank account. The report further reveals that 40% of the working age population have less than £100 in savings.
