From 1997-2013 she was President of Tearfund, a Christian relief and development charity, and has been involved in monitoring aid, relief and advocacy work in a number of African countries. Her widely acclaimed book Scars Across Humanity: Understanding and Overcoming Violence Against Women was published in November 2015.

Reverend Julia Murphy has been the Anglican Chaplain at the University of Essex since 2012. She was ordained in 2007, having studied Theology at Oxford University under Elaine Storkey and, prior to that, at the London School of Theology. Her first degree was in English and European Literature (Essex 1981) and she went on to work as a PA for 25 years for a variety of organisations including the United Nations in Geneva and ITV Telethon. Julia can regularly be seen around the campus with her springer spaniel, Joey.
