At any given time, approximately 50 postdoctoral researchers work across the University of Essex, contributing to a diverse range of disciplines within our three faculties, academic departments, and research institutes.
The Postdoctoral Hub within the EDPDC is dedicated to fostering a strong sense of community among our postdoctoral colleagues, advocating for postdoctoral scholars, and ensuring postdoctoral colleagues have access to tailored professional development opportunities.
Recognising postdoctoral researchers as a distinct group of early career scholars, we are committed to supporting their career progression and enhancing the university’s research culture. Our efforts align with our broader commitment to people, culture, and environment, ensuring a thriving and self-fulfilled postdoctoral community.
The Postdoctoral Hub plays a key role in coordinating the priorities, support services, and training needs of postdoctoral staff.
While professional development and training for both postdoctoral researchers and their managers are primarily delivered by departments and professional service areas—including Organisational Development (OD) and the Research and Enterprise Office (REO)—the EDPC provides a cohesive structure to ensure consistency and representation across the university.
Postdoctoral positions are widely recognised as a transitional career phase. For instance, the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) defines postdoctoral scholars as individuals holding a doctoral degree who engage in a temporary period of mentored research and scholarly training to develop the professional skills necessary for their chosen career paths.
To support our postdoctoral community, the Hub maintains a mailing list, organises cross-campus social events, and offers bespoke onboarding for new postdoctoral staff.
Additionally, in collaboration with Organisational Development, we curate a suite of training and development opportunities through the Researcher Development Framework, tailored to the unique needs of postdoctoral researchers. Topics include Communicating Your Research to Non-Specialist Audiences, Mentoring for Researchers, and maximising the Research Impact Tool.
Through these initiatives, the Postdoctoral Hub aims to create an enriching and supportive environment where postdoctoral researchers can thrive, connect, and advance their careers.
Current and planned training And development opportunities for postdoctoral researchers can be reviewed and booked through HR Organiser.
