The Financial Technology Essex Centre (FinteX) conducts cutting-edge research to investigate, understand, and guide the advancement of digital finance through technological innovation.

Artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data, and decentralised technologies are changing financial paradigms in a rapidly evolving financial landscape. FinteX plans to address not only the effect of technology on economic innovation and the provision of financial services, but also the impact on new business models, applications, processes, and products with an associated material effect on financial markets, institutions, and society.

Our centre acts as a hub for innovative research and socially impactful initiatives. FinteX supports projects that combine practical use with scientific accuracy. Due to the complexity of Fintech, the centre includes researchers from Essex Business School and various departments, schools, and centres within the university, such as Economics, Sociology, Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Law, and the Institute for Analytics and Data Science. The centre actively collaborates with financial institutions, non-financial firms, investors, startups, consumers, and regulatory bodies to create innovative solutions.

The Centre focus on specific themes related to Fintech such as (but not limited to):

  • Financial literacy
  • Cybersecurity and cybercrime
  • RegTech
  • Cryptocurrencies and Central Bank digital currency
  • Blockchain
  • Distributed Ledger Technology and Smart Contracts
  • Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning applications
  • Decentralised finance
  • Fintech as an engine for sustainable economic growth
  • Robustness and stability of electronic market infrastructure for high frequency finance and liquidity provision in e-clearing and settlement in financial markets.

FinteX conducts a wide range of activities, such as executive and training programs, IT laboratory sessions, workshops, and scientific publications to facilitate knowledge exchange among academia, practitioners, policymakers, and society.
