Carolyn Whitley
BSc Business Management
I’m originally from the United States and wanted to explore more of the world and experience a new culture. Having moved around quite a bit, I felt that the
Essex would be a great opportunity to immerse myself in a different environment and meet new people.
Although I had already taken university-level courses in the USA, I was keen to continue my education abroad and work towards a degree. I chose
Business Management at the University of Essex because it’s such a broad field, offering strong international career prospects and the flexibility to specialise later on. Studying in the UK as an international student has also helped me develop a more global perspective, both academically and personally.
I am still figuring out my plans for after graduation. I have received so much advice and support from my lecturers and personal tutor, which is helping me to shape my next steps. At this point, I’m leaning towards going into research or support for an NGO (non-governmental organisation) or humanitarian organisation.
One thing I’m particularly proud of from my time at Essex is how much I pushed myself socially, as it doesn’t come naturally to me. To step outside my comfort zone, I joined a variety of
societies.
I was actively involved in the MMA (mixed martial arts) club during my time at Essex, which was a fantastic way to meet people while trying something completely new at a beginner’s level.
I also travelled to Bath with the Travel Society for a day trip. I also travelled to Bath with the Travel Society for a day trip. I’d highly recommend joining the Travel Society if you want to see more of the UK. The Travel Society aims to organise a trip each month for its members to a different part of the country, and possibly a trip abroad at the end of the year. I really believe the social side is such an important part of university life – it’s the perfect chance to explore new interests and build meaningful friendships.
The
University of Essex Colchester campus is a wonderful place to be. I especially enjoy the lake and surrounding natural areas. In the spring, it’s particularly beautiful; there’s something really special about seeing students enjoying picnics and making the most of the warmer weather.
