I was coming to the end of my gap year, and after a trip to Marseille, France, and I was inspired to pursue my love for learning French, whilst combing it with my love of business and marketing. These elements were the deciding factors which resulted in me applying to University through Clearing.
I had already previously dropped out of my first-choice university and so I saw Clearing as a second chance not to be missed! My gap year of travels concluded in September so timewise, my only immediate option was to apply through Clearing.
I was searching for university’s that offered a double degree that aligned with my interests and Essex was the one that stood out. Essex also offered a year abroad option, which is something that really enticed me as I wanted to have the experience of living and working in France.
I actually applied just two weeks before the start of term, so I had less than a week to make a decision. Even at this late stage, once I’d accepted my offer, I managed to secure my university accommodation and get everything sorted and in place in good time.
I found the process of applying through Clearing at Essex very straightforward. The guidance Essex provided once I’d accepted my offer was clear and concise. Whilst I personally didn’t need any assistance throughout the application process, I knew that there was a Clearing helpline and help via phone or email available to me.
I’d recommend to anyone joining Essex through Clearing to attend Welcome Week, it helped me to see what societies and sports teams were available, and the events on campus during welcome week helped me meet new people and make new friends.
I think there is a bit of a stigma attached to Clearing. I think a lot of people view Clearing as a failed way into university, but for me it was a fresh start into a new adventure. My advice is to just go for it as you never know where it will take you!
