When we launched the Essex Futures appeal in 2022, we set out to raise £1 million to unlock opportunities for the next generation of pioneers, innovators and trailblazers. Thanks to your incredible support, we achieved that goal and the impact continues to grow.

One of the first students featured in the campaign was Eayan Subramaniam (LLB Law, 2022), recipient of the International Baccalaureate Excellence Scholarship. Originally from Malaysia, Eayan’s goal was clear: pursue a legal career and support vulnerable and disadvantaged people, particularly those unable to afford access to legal services.Eayan passing the Bar stood outside an old building lit up. Leaves scatter the floor behind him

Today, that vision is his reality. He was called to the Bar and is building up expertise in different areas of law. Over the past year, he has taken on a leadership role as Practice Manager and Deputy Head of Commercial and Residential Property at a law firm in Manchester where he deals a wide range of property matters alongside immigration and family disputes. Now also a certified mediator, Eayan plays a vital role in resolving conflicts and ensuring fair outcomes.

With his firm undertaking pro bono work, Eayan continues to champion the Essex Spirit in supporting others, particularly vulnerable people who need legal assistance but cannot afford it. “This work allows me to put my own personal values into meaningful practice,” he says.

With bigger ambitions to move into working as a barrister, Eayan’s journey is a powerful reminder of what your generosity makes possible, not just for individual students but for the communities they go on to serve. The need for financial support is greater than ever, and every contribution helps break down barriers and fund scholarships for talented students who dream of making a difference.
