Choosing where to study is a big decision, especially if you want to combine academic success with high-level sport. At the University of Essex, our Performance Football Programme gives student-athletes the chance to compete, develop, and thrive alongside their studies. For those applying through Clearing, Essex offers an incredible pathway — from access to top coaching and strength & conditioning support, to the opportunity to represent the university at the highest level. Here’s one student’s journey from serious injury to becoming men’s first team captain while progressing into postgraduate study.

Introducing... Cameron Button

Three years ago, I joined the University of Essex to study Sports Performance. At the time, I had no intention of playing football again after a serious ACL and meniscus injury that had side-lined me for 14 months. But after being approached by the university's coaching staff, I gave it a shot and haven’t looked back since my first training session.

With the support of the physio and Strength & Conditioning coaches, I was able to make a return to high-level football, something I wasn’t sure would be possible again. Their guidance was instrumental in my recovery and progress.

This year, the Performance programme took another step forward with the arrival of our new coach, Pawel. His experience and fresh approach helped lead us to an unbeaten season and promotion back to Tier 1.

I’ve decided to stay on the programme next year alongside my postgraduate studies. The decision was easy. Essex offers a unique balance between elite sport and academics. As team captain next season, I’m excited to lead the squad, grow the programme, and continue developing as a player and coach.

If you're considering applying through Clearing or still unsure where to study, I highly recommend Essex. It’s helped me grow both as an athlete and as a person. If you’re looking for a place where you can be treated like a professional while earning your degree, it’s a no-brainer.
