A new community arts project, Walk With Words, invites Essex students, staff and alumni to share their memories of Colchester.

Walk With Words is a community arts project and interactive walking trail made up of stories of Colchester. All members of our community – students, staff, alumni and the general public – can take part and stand a chance to win £300. Get involved in creating a digital memory bank that reflects the diverse community and ever-changing landscape of Colchester.

The immersive walking route, commissioned by Colchester City Council, features 16 directional posts strategically placed across key locations, including the city centre, university campus, and Greenstead. Key posts hold a unique QR code, unlocking a world of digital content that enhances your walking experience.

The route

The trail takes you on a journey from St Botolph’s through Magdalen Street, Hythe Hill, Hythe Quay, the Wivenhoe Trail, and finally to the swing basin and University campus. View the route.

Sharing your memories

This year's theme for Walk With Words is ‘Memories’. Students, staff and alumni are invited to draw inspiration from any moment along the walking route or its surroundings. Submissions can take various forms, including but not limited to poems, riddles, local advice, anecdotes, short stories, photography with captions, short films, or spoken word.

Submit your creative content before 29 February 2024 and you’ll be entered into the competition with a chance to win amazing prizes:

  • 1st Place: £300
  • 2nd Place: £200
  • 3rd Place: £100
