We know it can be an unsettling experience for many students who are moving away from home for the first time.

Whether you are 50 or 5000 miles from home, it is natural to feel a bit strange about living independently for the first time.

The good news is, there are lots of ways to combat homesickness and help make Essex feel like your second home!

Beat homesickness by:

  • Joining SU Societies & Sports Clubs – get back into your favourite sport or hobby.
  • Volunteering with SU VTeam – use your time in a new place to do something positive.
  • Checking University events and SU ‘what’s on’ pages – stay up to date with what’s happening on campus and get involved.
  • Keeping in contact with your friends and family – set up a WhatsApp group to share your new adventures and discuss how you’re feeling.
  • Talking to your new flatmates - you’ll realise that you’re not alone in missing home.

Remember, it's normal to feel homesick. You will need time to get settled and start enjoying your new life away from home.

If you need further support, your Residents’ Assistant (RA) can provide a listening ear. Drop in for a virtual chat any evening during term time, from 7pm-8pm. (Zoom meeting ID:  920 1237 9049).
