Research based externally funded studentships

There are a number of external funders who support individual studentships. Essex staff are encouraged to apply for these types of PGR studentships, financial support will be offered by the Pre-Award team and the standard service level agreement should be adhered to. Colleagues interested in applying should contact REO Pre-Award and the Research Development Manager PGR in the first instance who will support the development, approval, and review of your application.

Finding a funder

Research Professional

Research Professional gives you access to the latest funding information, with personalised searches/email alerts by discipline and funding sources and covers PGR funding opportunities such as NiHR, Diabetes UK, Rolex Scholarships, BAFTA Scholarships, or Endangered Languages Documentation Programme along with other trusts, foundations and learned societies. Opportunities for PGR Placements or Internships are often advertised on Research Professional too and can be found using the advanced search function.

The Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships (CDP) scheme

The Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships (CDP) scheme from AHRC gives non-HEI (non-higher education) partner organisations with a proven track record in postgraduate research the opportunity to apply for a cohort of a minimum of three doctoral studentships per year over a three-year period. Past award holders that have hosted successful CDPs are the British Library, English Heritage Trust, Museum of London Archaeology, the National Archives and others.

Colleagues interested in applying should contact the Research Development Manager PGR in the first instance who will support the development, approval and review of your application.

Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science and Technology (CASE)

Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science and Technology (CASE) provide funding for doctoral studentships where businesses and related organisations take the lead in arranging projects with an academic partner of their choice. These academic partners must hold Doctoral Training Partnership funding from EPSRC. EPSRC allocate awards directly to businesses and related organisations using an algorithm based on financial contributions to EPSRC-funded research. It is therefore not possible to apply for ICASE awards direct with EPSRC. Holders of EPSRC DTPs are required to convert 10% of the funds to CASE awards.

Application process for PGR research grants and studentships

Where PGR funding it is linked to a distinct research project and submitted by the proposed supervisor, support would be as standard from the REO. The RDM PGR will support the development of your application and the REO Pre-Award and Post-Award teams will deal with the financial and submission side of things.

Most applications for studentship funding will be above the institutional level of £50k and therefore require that they go through the formal internal review process. The standard internal review procedure should be followed.

Essex is supportive of match funding where appropriate. Liaise with the RDM PGR in the first instance who can advise and help direct your query depending on the funder and call.

Collaborative or industry-led studentship opportunities are developed through the Knowledge Exchange team. These include any opportunity to work with non-academic partners to part or fully fund studentships. These are coordinated by the Knowledge Exchange team, please get in touch with them directly.
