Library facilities and benefits for staff

Library & Cultural Services at the University of Essex comprises 3 libraries located in Colchester, Loughton, and Southend with main services based at the Albert Sloman Library in Colchester, as well as the Art Exchange gallery, Lakeside Theatre and ESCALA & University Art Collections, all situated in Colchester. 

Our users, both staff and students, are at the centre of our services, and we work in partnership to develop and deliver world class library services for the University of Essex. 

As an employee for the University of Essex you'll have access to a range of facilities and benefits provided by the library including:

A platform for newspapers and magazines from over 120 countries in over 60 languages. Whilst on campus, and connected to our network, access to the system is automatic.

An off-air recording and media archive service. It allows you to record TV and radio programmes scheduled to be broadcast over the next seven days as well as retrieving programmes from the last seven days from a selected list of recorded channels. In addition, you can watch programmes from the archive (back to around 2007 for 9 key channels), create clips, and compile your favourite shows into playlists.

Get free access to thousands of movies through your university library.

Online resource for plays, critical analysis and performance. It is a digital library of the most studied, performed and critically acclaimed plays from the last two and a half thousand years.

UK-based online genealogy service containing over 4 billion records including: the largest online collections of Irish records and UK parish records, and the most comprehensive archive of British military records online. Also contains: a collection of British newspapers dating from 1710 to 1955. Whilst on campus, and connected to our network, access to the system is automatic.

Members of staff are welcome to borrow e-books, and if available print copied for for leisure purposes. Plus, you can suggest titles for the library to purchase at no extra cost to you.
