Eyesight test and vouchers

Under Health and Safety law, we have a duty to provide provision for eye tests to those who use Display Screen Equipment (DSE) for their work and, where glasses are required solely for DSE work, a basic pair of spectacles.

To fulfil this, we offer Specsavers DSE eVouchers, redeemable at any Specsavers within the UK, which you are allowed to request once every two years

The voucher entitles you to a full eyesight test at Specsavers and either:

  • One complete pair of glasses from the £50 range, fitted with standard single vision lenses plus a scratch-resistant treatment when required solely for DSE use. It does not give a contribution to glasses needed for additional tasks, such as reading or driving.

OR

  • £50 contribution to an upgrade to other frame ranges, when required solely for DSE use, and you pay the difference.

PLUS

  • A further £20 towards glasses from the £100 range or above, when required solely for DSE use, giving you a combined contribution of £70.

Additional information

  • If you have a single prescription that is suitable for more than DSE (such as general wear, reading or driving), the voucher will only cover the cost of the eye test.
  • We are not able to provide vouchers for glasses only.
  • We are not able to provide vouchers retrospectively, or offer reimbursements if you choose to use an alternative optician or make any purchases outside of this scheme.

Requesting a voucher

If you would like a voucher, please first book an appointment with Specsavers then email ohquery@essex.ac.uk with proof of your appointment details. The voucher will then be sent to you via your Essex email within seven working days.

Please ensure you send your appointment details at least seven working days before your appointment, to ensure there is time for your voucher to be issued. We will not issue vouchers for appointments booked more than one month in advance.

Please ensure that you print the eVoucher and take it with you to your appointment.

If you’re unable to use your voucher for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible so that the voucher can be reallocated by emailing ohquery@essex.ac.uk.

Safety glasses

Where required, standard safety glasses are supplied as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). If you require prescription safety glasses, a separate voucher can be issued to cover this. When requesting safety glasses, please also state whether you have had an eye test in the last year and whether you might require bifocal or varifocal safety glasses.
