What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates performed on a sprung, moving platform called a reformer. Unlike mat Pilates, which uses your own bodyweight for resistance, the reformer uses adjustable springs, straps and a sliding carriage to add or reduce resistance through each movement. This makes it easier to target specific muscle groups, correct your alignment and build strength without putting excess strain on your joints.

Because the resistance is adjustable, reformer pilates suits a wide range of fitness levels, from complete beginners to experienced gym-goers looking for a low-impact way to build strength and flexibility.

Is reformer pilates good for beginners?

Yes. Reformer pilates suits beginners because the resistance and range of movement can be adjusted to your ability. Instructors guide you through the setup and correct your form throughout the class.

What are the benefits of reformer pilates?

Reformer pilates can help build core strength, improve posture, increase flexibility and support better balance, all while being low impact on your joints.

How often should I do reformer pilates?

Most people see the best results from one to three reformer pilates classes a week, alongside their usual training routine. Your instructor can advise on a schedule that suits your goals.

Do I need an Essex Sport membership to join a reformer pilates class?
