Profile

Biography

I am a higher education professional with extensive experience in language education, academic leadership, and curriculum design. I hold a PhD in Linguistics from Queen Mary, University of London, and I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE). My work integrates linguistic expertise, pedagogical innovation, and strategic management in the design and delivery of large-scale language programmes in higher education. My academic background brings together linguistics, educational leadership, and translation and interpreting. I completed a PhD in Linguistics at Queen Mary, University of London, an MA in Educational Leadership at the University of Nottingham, and an MA in Linguistics at SOAS, University of London, as well as an MA in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Westminster. I also hold a BA in Law (Licenciado en Derecho) from the University of Cantabria in Spain. I have taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both the UK and the US. My teaching interests include Spanish language and linguistics, intercultural communication, and applied linguistics. I have designed and implemented curricula across multiple levels, with a particular emphasis on inclusive pedagogy, assessment design, and digital learning integration. I also mentor academic staff and contribute to professional development initiatives focused on teaching innovation and continuous enhancement of student experience. As Director of Languages for All at the University of Essex, I lead a cross-institutional programme that offers tuition in eight languages to over 1,000 students each year. My role involves academic coordination, staff management, quality assurance, and resource planning. I have led initiatives promoting digital learning, data-informed decision-making, and inclusive curriculum design. My leadership approach is collaborative and evidence-based, with a strong commitment to equity, excellence, and innovation in teaching and learning. Alongside my academic career, I have worked as a freelance translator and interpreter since 2001, specialising in legal, business, and institutional communication. My clients have included the UK Ministry of Defence and various international organisations across Europe and the United States. This professional practice informs my teaching and research, especially in areas related to applied linguistics and intercultural communication. My research interests lie at the intersection of linguistics, education, and multilingualism. I am particularly interested in language aptitude and learning strategies among hyperpolyglots, the role of metacognition in multilingual acquisition, and the cognitive and sociocultural dimensions of language learning. I also explore themes related to educational leadership, curriculum innovation, and the use of learning analytics to enhance teaching quality and student outcomes.
